Chiropractic Services and How They Help Remedy Back Pain -- By Melody Craig

Over the past years, chiropractic has emerged as one of the most commonly utilized health care techniques, and its field has been more widely recognized by medical organizations, particularly in the United States and Canada, as well as in Australia. Despite the many debates on whether chiropractic should be classified as a legitimate medical discipline or a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), it is seen to be most effective in treating and managing back pain.
Overview of Chiropractic
The principle of chiropractic is anchored on the belief that a person's overall health condition is heavily dependent on his musculoskeletal structure. Thus, if his spine is properly aligned, a person will less likely experience headaches, neck and back pains, and other conditions associated with his musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors, then, advocate the use of noninvasive and nonsurgical techniques in dealing with said conditions. Instead of resorting to expensive, and sometimes traumatic, medical "under-the-knife" procedures, chiropractors employ manual and hands-on adjustment and manipulation of the spine, as well as certain joints and soft tissues to diagnose, treat and prevent musculoskeletal-related conditions. Because of this approach, chiropractic is often mistaken for physical therapy and even for general massage services.
It should be noted that chiropractors must first undergo a formal and professional degree and training in chiropractic before being able to provide services to patients. Some areas even require chiropractors to secure a license from the government. While they are authorized to adopt manual techniques, however, they are not allowed to prescribe medicines to their patients. Instead, they can only refer their patients to medical specialists such as an orthopedic or a sports medicine doctor.
Chiropractic Services
A typical chiropractic clinic or center offers services that care for patients experiencing pain or discomfort in musculoskeletal regions, namely, the back, neck, head, arms and legs. While chiropractors focus more on treating said conditions, they also diagnose the cause of the pain and recommend a short-, medium-, or long-term program to address the same, depending on the nature and gravity of the patient's condition. Some chiropractors also offer on-site or home services for patients who can no longer travel to their clinic. Still, other chiropractors set up a free consultation hotline where they respond to chiropractic-related queries from individuals.
Management of Back Pain
Among the many conditions that chiropractors are able to manage, back pain seems to be the most common complaint of their patients. The question now is: How do chiropractors effectively treat back pain?
First, the chiropractor administers a detailed physical examination of the patient and takes into account his previous medical conditions, ailments or operations. After getting a clear and holistic picture of the patient's need, the chiropractor then maps out a treatment plan, which can either be a manual manipulation of the spine or of the muscles, or a combination of both. Spinal manipulation aims to enhance the structure and function of the spine and nerve systems, while chiropractic mobilization targets muscles and joints to improve movability and the motion capacity of the body. To ensure that all factors that may be contributors to back pain are eliminated or mitigated, chiropractors likewise give nutritional advice, and if necessary, recommend an exercise or rehabilitation program.
Since chiropractors do a hands-on technique, their manipulation is said to be more direct and zeroed in on the problem area. It is for this reason that chiropractors' services are often more cost-effective and sometimes even faster-acting than drugs, pain relievers and pain killers, or any other traditional medical procedure.

Chiropractic Effectively Helps Neck Pain -- By Nathan E Leavitt

The bones in your neck are collectively known as the cervical spine. The cervical spine contains seven vertebrae and supports the weight of the head. The head weighs approximately 12 pounds. The neck allows the head to turn in virtually any direction. However, this makes the neck prone to injury. Motor vehicle accidents can cause a sudden movement to the head and neck that is extremely forceful. This is often called whiplash which is named for the whipping motion. The sudden whipping motion can result in significant damage to the delicate structures in the neck. The muscles of the neck can go into spasm causing stiffness and pain. With a more severe injury, the deeper structures of the neck such as the discs, nerves, ligaments and joints may be adversely affected. As we get older, degenerative changes may occur in the neck such as osteoarthritis and wearing out of the cartilage in the joint spaces. Osteoarthritis is very common among older people. In the neck there is a deterioration of cartilage in the discs of the neck. Calcium deposits may also form around the joints as a protective mechanism often called bone spurs. Bad lifestyle habits can cause problems in the neck. Having bad posture such as slouching, weight gain and weakened abdominal muscles can result in neck problems. These problems can cause an imbalance to the spine causing the neck to compensate. Stress, including physical and emotional stress can tighten the muscles of the neck and shoulders resulting on abnormal pressure on the spine. This can result in chronic neck pain if it is not taken care of. Chiropractic physicians are well trained to locate and examine problems in the neck. They perform specific exams to determine the source of the problem. The chiropractor will look at posture, range of motion and observe for any other abnormalities in the neck. They will also feel the cervical spine to determine if the spinal bones are misaligned or if there are tight muscles. Chiropractors use natural, conservative methods to help correct problems in the neck. They do not use drugs or surgery but can refer to another healthcare provider if these are necessary. The chiropractor may ask the patient for permission to contact their primary care physician to coordinate care. Chiropractors perform specific hands on adjustments to help correct misaligned spinal bones which are a common cause of neck pain. Patients often report significant improvement in turning their head following a chiropractic adjustment. - Nathan Leavitt DC Dr. Leavitt has been a licensed chiropractic physician since 2003. Chiropractic Adjustments - By Kyle Alm

Chiropractors have an important function in our culture. These medical professionals are a part of the health care field that emphasized diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the muscle and skeletal systems, predominantly the spine. Chiropractors are doctors that manipulate your spine to lead you to better overall health.
The actual word chiropractic comes from the Greek words chiro, which means hand, and praktikos, which means that it is concerned with some sort of action.
Training to become a chiropractor is difficult just like any other medical profession. A person looking to go into chiropractics needs to earn a college degree that is focused in the basic sciences of biology, chemistry or physics. In the past only 2 years of college (associate's degree) were required for admission to the different chiropractic schools but in order to be competitive most applicants now need a 4 year degree. During the undergraduate years the person looking to become a chiropractor will have to complete prerequisites that are required for admission into a chiropractic school.
There are 21 chiropractic colleges in the United States that have accreditation from the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE). Potential students must send their applications to each potential school after he or she has finished a degree. Once admitted to the chiropractic school each student will need to complete an average of 14 quarters of classes that include anatomy, pathology, public health, rehabilitation, nutrition, physiology, and chiropractic research. The total amount of post bachelor schooling for a chiropractor is three to five years.
Most chiropractors will start their own private practices after they graduate. They are responsible for getting new clients and expanding their business. Many patients visit the chiropractor to resolve a condition called vertebrial subluxation. This is a condition that is denoted by vertebral joints becoming misaligned and causing the patient pain or restriction in movement and use.
The legitimacy of the chiropractic field has been hotly debated among medical professionals ever since it was started in the 1890's. Some people claim that chiropractors are not real doctors because some of their practices are not backed by scientific research. The debate on the validity of chiropractics is still raging although there has been heavy research since the 1970s.
If you are interested in finding a good chiropractor in your area you may want to start by searching the Internet for potential offices in your area. Make sure the doctors come with good referrals from members of the community.

Chiropractors Methods For Aligning Your Spine --- By Jim D Knight

When medicines can't help patients with their chronic back problems, chiropractic methods provide them the much needed respite. Chiropractic is a branch of healthcare that specializes in diagnosis, cure and prevention of mechanical problems in the muscular-skeletal structure of the human body, with special emphasis on the spine. This treatment is imparted through many techniques such as massage, exercise, acupuncture and food supplements.
Chiropractic practitioners firmly believe that disorders of the spine may affect the common health of an individual as it obstructs the body's function. Over many years, chiropractic treatments have the record of being one of the most excellent of treatments. It has obtained acceptance between medical circuits and healthcare institutes in the US.
Chiropractors apply chiropractic adjustment to align the spine. This is one of the most common treatments used in this field. According to a recent study, almost 90% cases that come to chiropractors, are cured through this method.
What is Chiropractic Adjustment?
Chiropractors align the spine through a spinal adjustment where a three-joint complex is taken above the normal range of movements, taking special care that the spine is not dislocated or damaged. A sudden jolt is used and attempts are made to increase the spine's range of motion.
It can cause a release which is audible. different methods are applied for aligning the spine such as massage, manipulation, stimulation, mobilization, etc. Once the spine is unlocked from its incorrect position it can easily realign itself. However, various sessions are needed before the spine sets absolutely.
What Techniques are Applied?
Since every situation is unique, chiropractors learn several aligning techniques. The weight, height and muscle structure of the chiropractor and the patient decide which approach or technique will be essential. Most competent techniques are the one that will align the spine without application of too much pressure. The chiropractors are trained how to contain pressure with respect to the patient's height, weight, etc.
Aligning your Spine the Chiropractic Way
This process of spine alignment is painless. Gentle pressure is applied with minimal force. Patients hardly complain about any kind of uneasiness. The popping sounds from your body don't mean something has broken within. These pops are produced due to small pockets of gas. They are equivalent to the cracking of knuckles.
Patients who don't loosen themselves or stay stiff during the therapy sometimes think some sorts of discomfort. For this reason, all chiropractic practitioners advice their patients to stay relaxed and calm during the whole treatment. Several first-time patients stay stiff and prevent the adjustment; with several sessions they tend to loosen up their body. With chiropractors who are licensed and trained to practice, one must not worry about damages. With several alignment treatments, the popping sounds will vanish and your spine will experience normal levels of flexibility.
Chiropractic methods for alignment can be used for:
* Stiffness and pain in the shoulders, neck, arms, back, chest, hands, hips, abdomen, feet,legs.
* Nerve disorders.
* Headaches.
* Arthritis
* Trauma and injuries in the body like whiplash.
* Sports injuries like tennis elbow, sprained joints, muscles and ligaments, etc.
